My Co-Worker (A Complaint)

Soon after my university’s first few cases of covid-19 were identified, we all started to work remotely.  It’s been a month now – March 16^th to April 18^th – and I feel entitled to make some remarks about my new co-worker here at home.

Well, one of my co-workers is fine.  We respect each other’s workspace (the rocking chair vs the couch), he helps me with any technical problems, he appreciates the meals that appear before him, he cleans up after the cook, is easy to get along with, and there’s generally no problem.

It’s my other co-worker.  Can I tell you what she's like?  She doesn’t care if I’m trying to work  -- she talks to me at the most inconvenient times, like during my meetings, and she’s got no filter at all.  Yesterday morning she yelled at me for no reason I could see, and then just walked away without explaining what she wanted.  I think I didn’t do something the way she wanted it, but really, I have no idea what.  Personal space?  What’s that?   If I want to sit in my chair, she’s there.  If I’m on the couch, so is she.  She apparently thinks she’s my supervisor, but she’s totally not.  However, she’s always interested in what I’m doing (just plain nosy, not to mention a bit of a micromanager at times) and is always touching my stuff.  Sometimes she wants my lunch instead of hers, and she’ll take my drinks if I let my guard down.  She has no shame and no respect for management.  She takes extended breaks during the workday – even sleeps right there at the computer -- and leaves me to get everything done by myself.  I’m not entirely sure what her job entails – some sort of project management, I think.  Whatever it is, she only seems to work on it sporadically.   She does check in with me to make sure I’m ok, which is nice and all, but she often wants to get more physical affection from me than is really appropriate in the office.  Sometimes she even licks me.  I would report that to HR, but who would believe me?

All that, and my remote co-workers on those video teleconferencing calls seem to like her better than me?

Mi Colega (Una Queja)

Poco después de que se identificaron los primeros casos de covid-19 de mi universidad, todos comenzamos a trabajar de forma remota. Ya ha pasado un mes, del 16 de marzo al 18 de abril, y me siento con derecho a hacer algunas observaciones sobre mi nueva colega aquí en casa.

Bueno, uno de mis compañeros de trabajo está bien. Respetamos el espacio de trabajo el uno al otro (la mecedora o el sofá), me ayuda con cualquier problema técnico, aprecia las comidas que aparecen delante de él, limpia lo que la cocinera deja sucio, es fácil llevarse bien con él, y en general no hay problema.

Es la otra colega. ¿Te puedo contar cómo es? No le importa si estoy tratando de trabajar: me habla en los momentos más inconvenientes, como durante mis reuniones, y no tiene ningún filtro. Ayer por la mañana me gritó sin razón alguna que pudiera ver, y luego se alejó sin explicar lo que quería. Creo que no hice alguna cosa como ella quería, pero realmente, no tengo idea de qué cosa. ¿El espacio personal? ¿Qué es eso? Si quiero sentarme en mi silla, está allí. Si estoy en el sofá, ella también. Aparentemente cree que es mi supervisora, pero no lo es. Sin embargo, ella siempre está interesada en lo que estoy haciendo (simplemente entrometida, sin mencionar un poco de microgestor a veces) y siempre está tocando mis cosas. A veces quiere mi almuerzo en lugar del suyo, y tomará mis bebidas si bajo la guardia. Ella no tiene vergüenza, ni respeto por la administración. Toma descansos prolongados durante la jornada laboral, incluso duerme delante de la computadora, y me deja hacer todo por mí misma. No estoy completamente segura en qué consiste su trabajo, creo que algún tipo de gestión de proyectos. Sea lo que sea, ella sólo parece trabajar esporádicamente. Viene a visitarme para asegurarse de que estoy bien, lo cual está muy bien, pero a menudo quiere recibir más demostraciones de afecto físico que lo que realmente es apropiado en la oficina. A veces incluso me lame. Le informaría eso a Recursos Humanos, pero ¿quién me creería?

Todo eso, ¿y a mis compañeros de trabajo remotos en esas llamadas de video teleconferencia les agrada ella más que yo?
